The ‘Messy Desk’ Mentality

Let’s play a game of imagination. You walk into a meeting room, but instead of a conference table, you find a cluttered desk covered in sticky notes, broken pens, piles of overdue paperwork, and emotional baggage. Not the best way to start a productive day, right?

That’s what many entrepreneurs are doing every day! Showing up to their business with a mind full of clutter, self-doubt, and past failures. And they’re wondering why things aren’t flowing 🤔

The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer is the business owner’s guide to clearing that desk. The mental desk and showing up to your business with clarity, focus, and freedom.

It’s not just about finding inner peace for the sake of zen vibes. This book teaches me that mental and emotional freedom is a game-changer in business.

You can’t scale your business if you’re still holding on to outdated, limiting beliefs.

Lesson 1: Your Inner Critic is a Terrible CEO

Let’s talk about your inner critic. You know the one, right? The voice that says, “What if I fail? What if I screw this up? What if no one buys my products?”

That voice is the worst business partner you’ll ever have. It’s like hiring someone who never shuts up and constantly undermines your decisions. Yet, we listen to it like it’s gospel.

The Untethered Soul argues that you are not your thoughts. Thoughts are like clouds passing through. They come and go, and none of them have any real power unless you give them control.

Instead of taking these thoughts as truth, Singer suggests that you witness them like a casual observer at a football match. Watch the drama unfold, but don’t get caught up in the game.

Instead of listening to that nagging voice of self-doubt, ask yourself:

“Would I hire this voice to run my business?” If the answer is no, then why let it run your mind?

This is a mindset shift: let go of the unqualified CEO in your head and take charge.

Lesson 2: The Power of Letting Go

You’ve worked hard to build your business. And when something doesn’t go according to plan, you want to hold on tighter. That client who cancelled, that failed campaign, or that bad review………..how dare they!

You think by holding onto the past, you can avoid future failure.

You can’t move forward if you’re holding onto the past.

Letting go isn’t about giving up; it’s about creating space for the new. As entrepreneurs, we cling to the outcomes whether it’s a “perfect” product launch or a deal that went south. But attachment is the root of suffering and your business will always be a hostage to your attachment to perfection, approval, or past disappointments.

Singer’s genius idea? Treat all experiences like visitors. Let them come in, and then let them leave. Don’t hold on to them like they’re your childhood toys. They’re not. They don’t define you.

Who has time to hang onto yesterday’s baggage when there’s a whole new world of opportunities calling?

Lesson 3: Mental Clarity Leads to Business Clarity

Ever feel like your thoughts are running faster than your to-do list? You’re juggling customer complaints, social media notifications, project deadlines, and that thing you forgot to do last week (Oops!).

Mental clutter is a productivity killer. It reduces your ability to focus and stifles your creativity. The worst part? It makes it nearly impossible to see the big picture.

The Untethered Soul offers the perfect antidote: mental clarity. Think of it like spring cleaning for your mind. The more you clear the junk, the more space you have for creativity, strategic thinking, and serenity.

So, how do we do this?

  • Create a “daily declutter” habit. Every morning, let go of whatever’s weighing you down.
  • Practice mental resets. Hit pause when you start feeling overwhelmed.
  • Detach from the outcome. Stop stressing about how things will unfold, and focus on the process instead.

💡 Thought Exercise: Whenever you face an obstacle, ask yourself: Am I reacting out of fear or am I responding with clarity? Your response will define the success of your business.

Lesson 4: Success is Not About the Outcome: It’s About the Freedom to Choose

As entrepreneurs, we’ve been taught that success is about hustle: how many hours we work, how many emails we send, how many meetings we have. We get so caught up in the grind that we forget: True success comes from freedom.

The freedom to choose how you spend your time, the freedom to let go of what doesn’t serve you, and the freedom to respond to life instead of reacting.

When you detach from the outcome, you actually free yourself to succeed in unexpected, creative ways.

So stop putting yourself in mental shackles with the pressure of needing things to turn out just the way you imagined. When you let go of the outcome, you open up the possibility for more than you ever expected.

Embrace Your Inner Entrepreneur

Building a business is hard enough without dragging unnecessary mental weight along for the ride. The Untethered Soul isn’t about finding peace for the sake of being zen; it’s about freeing your mind so you can think clearly, act decisively, and thrive in your business.

If you want to succeed as an entrepreneur, you have to free yourself from the internal noise that holds you back. You have to let go of your fears, your attachments, and your self-doubt.

So, my fellow entrepreneurs, are you ready to declutter your mind and elevate your business?

Let go of what’s holding you back, and make space for something extraordinary to unfold.
